In the s, he produced some of the most visually arresting and politically hard-hitting artwork of the 20th century, appropriating the widely circulated propaganda of the time to create its total antithesis. John Heartfield began to make photomontages as a member of the Berlin branch of international Dada around Schooled in graphic arts and having worked briefly in animated film, Heartfield (who had anglicized his given name, Helmut Herzfeld, in as a protest against wartime nationalism) subsequently developed a cinematic effect in montages that he made for book illustration. With designs for book jackets, magazines, and political pamphlets, John Heartfield () established himself as Berlin's most innovative graphic designer of the Weimar period. While he was initially associated with the Dada movement, his affiliations with the communist party and the rise of Nazism eventually led him to change his approach.
